Olympic gymnast Mary Lou Retton is back home and on the mend after being treated in the intensive care unit for severe pneumonia.
Her daughter McKenna Lane Kelley shared the update Monday, writing on Instagram, “Mom is HOME & in recovery mode. We still have a long road of recovery ahead of us, but baby steps.” Kelley went on to thank Retton’s community of fans, as well the doctors and nurses that tended to her, writing, “We are overwhelmed with the love and support from everyone.”
Retton, 55, was hospitalized for about two weeks in the ICU, where she had been “fighting for her life” and unable to breathe on her own, Kelley previously wrote. Last week, Kelley noted that her mother’s path to recovery was “steadily progressing.”
Retton’s four daughters have since raised more than $450,000 through a crowdfunding campaign to pay her hospital bills.
A five-time Olympic medalist, Retton shot to superstardom at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, where the then-16-year-old became the first American to win an Olympic individual all-round gold. After nabbing silver in the vault, bronze in the uneven bars and floor, and another silver in the team event, Retton became the most decorated athlete at that year’s Games.
After Retton hung up her leotard, she made several TV and movie appearances (often playing herself), with credits including Knots Landing, Baywatch, Scrooged, Dream On, and Buddy Faro. She also competed on Dancing With the Stars in 2018 and has worked as a motivational speaker.
